In the first free concert of the year the Town Hall Organ Trust responds to the city’s growing Chinese population. While there is solid fare for organ aficionados, there are also works for organ and suona, a traditional Chinese double reed instrument.
Organ works include: Mozart’s Fantasie in F minor, K 608, Piernè’s Trois Piéces, Op 29, Liszt’s Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Dorian)
East meets West includes the Bach/Vivaldi Concerto in D major BWV 972 arranged for organ and suona followed by a selection of Chinese works for organ and suona.
The organist is the young Hongkong star Eric Chan: the suona player, one of the world’s leading exponents of the instrument, is Yazhi Guo. The pair recently completed an impressive European tour.
